The leaves contain a complex variety of bioactive substances including phenolic compounds,
triterpenic acids, iridoids, and sugars. Among these some major constituents include: oleanolic and maslinic acids, oleuropein, oleuropeoside, ligustroside, hydroxytyrosol and their glucosides, and mannitol. These compounds impart a wide range of benefits for topical skin care.
In vitro cell culture studies demonstrated significant increases of collagens I and IV (+221% and
+319% respectively). Ex vivo human skin explant studies have shown increases in ceramides and collagen IV (+25%, +52% respectively).
